What is LIHEAP?

LIHEAP is a federally funded program that provides a one-time vendor payment to help eligible households pay their heating bills. Applications for LIHEAP are accepted from December 1st through March 31st or until funds are exhausted.

Who is eligible?

Starting December 1, 2024: Households with a person age 60 or older or a disabled person receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS). Households who currently receive Food and Nutrition Services and received LIHEAP during the 2023-2024 LIHEAP season may qualify to receive an Automatic Payment this LIHEAP season. These households will be notified of eligibility in November and do not need to apply for this benefit.

Starting January 1, 2025: All other households may submit applications beginning January 1, 2025. The application period continues through March 31, 2025, or until funds are exhausted. Households do not have to go into the agency to apply. 

How to apply

  • In person at Beaufort County Department of Social Services (632 W. Fifth St. Washington, NC)
  • By submitting a paper application to Beaufort County DSS
  • By phone (252-975-5500)
  • Online at epass.nc.gov
  • Applications will also be taken at the following locations 
    • St. James Episcopal Church in Belhaven, on December 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
    • Aurora Community Building on December 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
