Environmental Health

Beaufort County Environmental Health is a Division of the Beaufort Health Department and it seeks to enrich the quality of life for Beaufort County citizens through opportunities for improved health and welfare. The Division builds upon the history of public health and assists in maintaining an environment in which it is pleasant to live and work while responding to the dynamics of the growth of our county and the changing priorities of the health care system.

This is accomplished through the development, implementation, and maintenance of programs designed to assist in the conservation of life and the eradication and or suppression of adverse environmental factors.

Below are the services provided by Beaufort County Environmental Health:

On-Site Wastewater Program

This section’s goal is to ensure that the public receives the highest quality of service from the Health Department in its implementation of the onsite wastewater program. This section is responsible for activities associated with subsurface sewage collection, treatment and disposal and the systems that deal with domestic and industrial process wastewater. Soil evaluations are performed to determine the suitability of a proposed site for ground absorption sewage disposal. Septic inspections are performed on existing septic systems for the purpose of acquiring a building permit for structural additions, new mobile homes, swimming pools, etc. The inspection of installations on all new sewage disposal systems is performed to ensure compliance with the rules and regulations that govern these systems.

Permits are issued for both new septic systems as well as any needed repairs. Environmental Health Specialists also investigate complaints relative to onsite wastewater, potable water supplies and general sanitation. This section also inspects private water supplies, collects water samples, inspects Travel Trailer Parks and Manufactured Home Parks, and evaluates Migrant Housing Facilities.

Food, Lodging and Institutions Program

This section’s goal is to ensure food safety and sanitation in permitted establishments. The Food and Lodging program consists of a variety of unannounced facility inspections, including: restaurants, food stands, meat markets, nursing homes and hospitals, school cafeterias, residential care facilities, mobile food units and pushcarts, summer camps, and lodging facilities.

Permitting of temporary food stands (food booths for races, carnivals, fairs, etc.) is also done through this program. Environmental Health Specialists work to ensure compliance with all sanitation requirements by routine inspections, food handling education, plan review of all new establishments, and complaint investigation. Through food safety education, Environmental Health Specialists hope to prevent food-borne outbreaks within our community.

Private Drinking Water Well Program

This section's goal is to protect the public health by ensuring proper construction of private drinking water well in Beaufort County and ensuring safe drinking water. It is also committed to providing the highest quality of service to the public through its implementation of the statewide well rules.

Childhood Lead Poinsoning Prevention Program

This program works with children that have been identified with elevated blood lead levels. The goals are to reduce the blood-lead level of identified poisoned children, reduce the lead burden by identifying and eliminating lead hazards and to reduce the number of lead-poisoned children in Beaufort County.

Public Swimming Pool Program

This program is responsible for permitting and inspecting all public swimming pools in the County as mandated by the State.  The goal is to ensure that the public receives the highest quality of service from the Health Department .

Tattoo Inspection and Permitting Program

This sections goal is to insure that tattooing is conducted in a safe manner and that the State laws and rules are enforced about sanitation issues. Tattoo artists are permitted when all laws and rules are met and inspections are conducted to insure sanitation standards are maintained.

Child Care Facility Sanitation Program

The EHS in this program enforces the state laws and rules addressing sanitation and safety in the child care establishments within Beaufort County.  The goal is to ensure that the public receives the highest quality of service from the Health Department in its implementation of the child care facility program.
